The Taj Mahal, an ivory-white marble mausoleum on the south bank of the Yamuna, was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of Empress Mumtaz Mahal and completed over about 17 years by some 22,000 artisans. Celebrated as the finest example of Mughal architecture and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, it draws millions of visitors every year. The complex includes the main mausoleum, a mosque, a guest house and formal charbagh gardens with reflecting pools.
Timings: 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes before sunset
Weekly closure / special viewing: Friday (open only for namaz at the mosque). Night viewing: 8:30 PM–12:30 AM on full-moon night and two days before/after (except Fridays and the month of Ramzan); separate ASI ticket required.

How to reach: 6 km from Agra Cantt railway station; 13 km from Agra Airport (Kheria); 4 km from ISBT. Petrol/diesel vehicles are not permitted within 500 m of the monument — free battery buses and paid golf carts operate from Shilpgram (Eastern Gate) and the Western Gate parking.
Facilities & visitor tips: Ticket windows and cloak rooms at Eastern and Western Gates; free shoe covers and drinking water with foreign tickets; wheelchairs available at entry gates; online tickets at asi.paygov.org.in (small discount applies).
